Questions from streamers

What is the difference between an event, a target and a free stream?

An event has a fixed date in the events calendar, like a meteor shower or an eclipse. A target is an object that is in the sky right now, like a comet. A free stream is your own subject. For events and targets, title, picture and description are already there — you only add your time and a short description.

Can I change my plan later?

Yes. Open your planned stream again from your profile and change what you need, for example the start and end time.

Why do I need YouTube?

The video itself runs on your own YouTube channel. AstronomyLive shows it on the map, on the Streams page and on your profile. AstronomyLive never uploads, changes or deletes anything on your channel.

How does my streamer level grow?

Every stream adds progress toward the next level, starting as New Streamer. You can follow your progress in your Streamer dashboard.

Is there a faster way to get help?

Yes. In your Streamer dashboard and in the planner, the support chat answers your questions right away.

Questions from viewers

How do I get reminded when a stream starts?

Click Remind me when it starts on a stream under Upcoming Streams.

Which time zone are the times shown in?

You choose it above the list, next to Times in: My time, UTC or Streamer’s local time.

Can I turn off the background music?

Yes. Streamers can add Background music to their stream; you can switch it off on the stream page.

Can I watch several streams at once?

During events with several streamers, switch to the grid view (2×2 or 3×3) and click a stream to see its chat.

Questions from organizations

For observatories, astronomy clubs, planetariums and schools.

Can our observatory, club or planetarium stream on AstronomyLive?

Yes. You use the same steps as every streamer: plan a stream, connect your YouTube channel and go live. The two videos under “For streamers” show how.

Which YouTube channel is shown?

The channel you connect in the Streamer dashboard — usually your organization’s own channel. AstronomyLive only shows the stream; nothing is uploaded, changed or deleted on your channel.

Can we take part in a sky event?

Yes. Choose Join an event when you plan your stream. Your stream is then listed on that event’s page.
